Skoutari<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The village of Skoutari, which means shield<\/em> in ancient Greek, existed since antiquity and it was originally called Assini. <\/em>During the Roman period it belonged to Sparta.\u00a0<\/p>

With the fall of the Byzantine empire and the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Skoutari was inhabited by refugees from Asia Minor expelled by the Ottomans. During the 17th and 18th centuries the area of Skoutari became a base for pirates, especially Barbarossa.\u00a0<\/p>

Skoutari is a small, picturesque village of Eastern Mani which is about 15 km from both Gythio and Areopolis. It is located on a hill that is about 400 meters from the sea. The picturesque bay is divided by rocky coastline into three beautiful and crystal-clear beaches that get awarded every year by the “blue flag” rating: Kalamakia, Skoutari and Agia Varvara. These beaches are sandy with some pebbles and are ideal for young children due to the relatively shallow depth of the sea near the shore.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Mani<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mani is a geographical area of Peloponissos (the Peloponnese) where, according to ancient Greek history, the ancient city of Pyrrichos or Kavallos existed. This city was located around 6 km away from present day town of Areopolis. The village of Pyrrichos which is near Areopolis possibly goes back to these earlier times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

During the Ottoman occupation of Greece, the area of Mani remained free and during the Greek revolution for independence from the Ottomans, people of Mani succeeded in repelling the armies of the Ottoman General Ibrahim. As Mani remained unoccupied by the Ottomans for centuries, many Greeks from the Turkish-occupied areas found sanctuary there.<\/p>

The name Mani has its origins in the ancient word manos<\/em> which means a place without vegetation. Its geographical boundaries extend from Mt Taygetos to Cape Tainaro, the southernmost tip of the Balkan peninsula between the Laconian and Messinian Gulfs. According to ancient Greek mythology and Pausanias, a cave located in this area was the necromancy of Poseidon, believed to be the gateway to Hades, the underworld.<\/p>

Mt Taygetus shapes the geomorphology of Mani into three distinct geographies: the eastern or \u201cLower\u201d Mani, facing the Laconian Gulf, the Western or \u201cInner\u201d Mani, overlooking the Messinian Gulf, and the northwestern Mani known as \u201cOuter\u201d Mani.<\/p>

Since 2011, the area of Mani consists administratively of the municipality of West Mani, which is based in Kardamyli and belongs to the county of Messinia, and the municipality of Eastern Mani, which belongs to the county of Laconia and is based in Gythio and has its historical seat in Areopolis.<\/p>

Of the 118 settlements of the Peloponnese that have been officially characterised as traditional, 98 are located in Mani recognizing the unique traditional architectural styles of Mani.\u00a0 The beautiful and imposing landscape of Mani, with its towers, castles, Byzantine churches and beautiful bays, attract many visitors both from the rest of Greece and from abroad.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
